How to play Spellie?

Pick a level

Easy words have 3 letters, Medium words have 4 and Hard words have 5. Each level has its own word of the day.

Guess and look at the colours

Red means the letter is in the right spot. Gold means it is in the word but somewhere else. Grey means it isn’t in the word.

Spell it and win an emoji

You have six tries. Stuck? Tap Picture clue to see an emoji of the word. Every word you solve adds its emoji to your collection.

What is the Spellie game?

Spellie is a Wordle for kids. It keeps the colour clues that make Wordle fun but uses shorter, everyday words that young spellers know, like CAT, FROG and APPLE. Kids practise spelling, letter patterns and problem solving without it feeling like homework.

This page is a free Spellie-style game you can play online in any browser, with no app and no sign-up. There are three daily words, one for each level, and they change at midnight Toronto time. Practice mode gives unlimited words whenever your child wants more.

Settings let you switch the keyboard to A to Z order, show lowercase letters for early readers, and turn the spell checker or the picture clue on and off.

Spellie FAQ

How do you play Spellie?

Guess the hidden word in six tries. After each guess, the colours show which letters are right, in the word, or not in the word.

What age is Spellie for?

It suits kids from about age 5 to 11. Easy works for beginners, and Hard is a good challenge for older kids.

Is there a new Spellie today?

Yes. New Easy, Medium and Hard words arrive every day at midnight Toronto time.

Can kids play Spellie unlimited?

Yes. Practice mode gives a new word every time you press Play again, and it doesn’t affect the daily streak.

How do the emojis work?

Each word has its own emoji. Solve the word to add the emoji to your collection, or tap Picture clue to see it early.

What if my child gets stuck?

Tap Picture clue to show an emoji of the word. You can also turn off the spell checker so any letters are accepted, which helps very young players experiment and learn as they go.

Can I change the keyboard?

Yes. In Settings, switch to an A to Z keyboard and lowercase letters, which many early readers find easier than QWERTY.

Is this Spellie game free?

Yes. It is free to play online on a tablet, phone or computer, with no account and no download. This is an independent Spellie-style game.
